French Broad Cabin is located high on a hill overlooking the Knoxville-Asheville line of Norfolk-Southern's Central Division. Ten to fifteen trains per day pass the cabin - not close enough to disturb - but an easy walk or drive right to the tracks.

Other nearby rail attractions:

-The renowned Clinchfield Line can be visited in an hour's drive from the Cabin.

-The famous Saluda Grade the steepest grade on any Class I U.S. railroad, is now being abandoned by the Norfolk Southern. It can still be visited in the picturesque town of Saluda, NC, about an hour's drive from French Broad Cabin.

There are several tourist railroads in the area as well.

-The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad operates a number of excursions year-round from nearby Dillsboro & Bryson City, North Carolina.

-The Tweetsie Railroad near Boone, NC operates from May to October.

The Norfolk Southern runs up the French Broad River through Marshall on its way to Asheville.
